    • Despite its reputation, cheese is rich in nutrition and can be part of a healthy diet.
    • Trader Joe’s offers a variety of soft, semi-hard and hard cheeses, making it easy to shop for any occasion.
    • From their award-winning Unexpected Cheddar Cheese to their classic Brie, you won’t be disappointed.

Cheese is a staple in many diets, and despite its impressive nutrition profile, it sometimes gets a bad reputation as “unhealthy.” However, in moderation, cheese can absolutely fit into a balanced diet. Plus, with so many types of cheese, there’s truly something for everyone.

“Other than [being] delicious, cheese is high in protein, which everyone is obsessed with right now,” says Erin Phillips, M.P.H., RD, CDCES. Cheese also provides a good source of fat and minerals like calcium, phosphorus, zinc and magnesium.

Next time you’re at Trader Joe’s, you might wonder what cheese to pick. The answer? It depends on what you’re looking for. To help, Phillips shares her top cheese picks from Trader Joe’s.

    1. Unexpected Cheddar Cheese

If you’re looking for a fan favorite, check out Trader Joe’s award-winning Unexpected Cheddar Cheese, which earned a spot in the Trader Joe’s Product Hall of Fame in 2023.

A blend of Italian Parmesan and American Cheddar, this cheese is not only delicious but is also lower in lactose than some softer cheeses, making it easier on the stomach. “Aged cheeses are typically better-tolerated by people with lactose intolerance and IBS,” says Phillips.

Unexpected Cheddar pairs beautifully with pears as a snack, shines on a charcuterie board or adds a flavorful twist to a turkey apple Cheddar sandwich. For the best flavor and texture, leave it out at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.

    2. Feta Cheese Block

“I’m really into feta right now,” says Phillips. “I used to always do the crumbled feta; I feel like the block tastes better.”

Traditional feta cheese is made from sheep’s milk and is a staple in the Mediterranean diet, but many varieties now use cow’s milk, including Trader Joe’s Feta Cheese block. What sets it apart is that it isn’t packed in a salty brine, giving it a tangier, drier texture.

Trader Joe’s also offers other feta options, including crumbled feta cheese and feta made with sheep’s milk.

The best part? Feta works on almost anything—from cheese boards and salads to shakshuka and tacos.

    3. Chèvre

Trader Joe’s Chèvre goat’s milk cheese is one you won’t want to miss out on. This unaged cheese is soft and spreadable—perfect for crackers or added to salads, roasted vegetables or omelets. It’s also lower in lactose, making it a friendly option for those with lactose intolerance.

    4. All Natural Fresh Mozzarella Cheese

Attention, mozzarella lovers: Trader Joe’s All Natural Fresh Mozzarella cheese is a must-try.

This large, fresh ball of mozzarella is versatile, delicious and perfect for fresh caprese salads or on top of homemade pizza.

Though this is a higher-fat cheese, that’s not a bad thing, Phillips reminds us. In fact, it’s a convenient source of calories, helps keep you full and adds satisfaction to meals.

    5. Double Cream Gouda Cheese

If you prefer a semi-hard cheese, try Trader Joe’s Double Cream Gouda Cheese. Made in the Netherlands with Hollander milk and extra cream, it has a rich, decadent flavor and creamy texture. Plus, it’s made with plant-based microbial enzymes, meaning it’s suitable for vegetarians.

Enjoy it on its own, melted into soups or in a sandwich—it’s truly Gouda for everything (pun fully intended.)

    6. Cotswold Double Gloucester Cheese

If you want to transport yourself to the rolling hills of England without leaving home, just eat Cotswold Double Gloucester Cheese. This variation of the popular Gloucester cheese from England is aged longer and is mixed with chopped onions and chives, giving it a bold, zippy flavor.

Originally a pub cheese, it pairs beautifully with beer or a full-bodied red wine like shiraz or zinfandel. It’s also delicious shredded into savory biscuits or served on a cheese board.

    7. Double Cream Brie

    Trader Joe’s. EatingWell design.

Brie is a classic for cheese boards and tasty appetizers. Next time you’re at Trader Joe’s, pick up their Double Cream Brie. This mild, easily spreadable, French-style cheese pairs wonderfully with sweet additions like fruit or jam, but can also work well with savory flavors such as seeded crackers or meat. You can even mix-and-match, such as spreading Brie on a cracker and topping it with prosciutto and fruit preserves.

Brie isn’t just for snacking, either. It’s delicious in savory dishes like pasta, grilled cheese or even crab wontons.

    Our Expert Take

Whichever way you enjoy it, Trader Joe’s has one of the best cheese selections around. For a charcuterie board, their Cheddar, Brie and Cotswold cheeses are top picks, while feta, goat cheese and mozzarella shine in salads or hearty, savory dishes. Either way, make sure to pay a visit to the cheese section on your next trip—you won’t regret it.
