Tomato sauce has been recalled due to potential bacteria contamination, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Monday.

First and Last Bakery, LLC of Hartford, Connecticut, recalled three of its tomato sauces that may contain Clostridium botulinum, bacteria that can cause botulism—a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

According to the FDA, the recalled sauce was made “without an approved schedule process,” and failure to properly process tomato sauce can lead to the formation of Clostridium botulinum toxins.

The recall affects three First and Last tomato sauces:

    • Original Marinara Sauce, Tomato & Basil
    • Original Traditional Pasta Sauce, Meat Flavored
    • Original Puttanesca Sauce, Mildly Hot & Spicy

The sauces were packaged in 26-fluid-ounce jars with the use-by date of September 2026.

The recalled products were sold in Big Y and Stop & Shop stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts on Sept. 22, 2025.

The FDA is urging customers to return the recalled products for a full refund.

If you think you may have consumed contaminated tomato sauce, watch for botulism symptoms, such as:

    • General weakness
    • Dizziness
    • Double-vision
    • Trouble speaking, swallowing, or breathing
    • Abdominal distension
    • Constipation

Contact a healthcare provider if you experience symptoms after eating the recalled tomato sauce.
