    The Heat Has Forced Tourists to Reconsider Their Vacations: A Story from National Geographic
    How is climate change affecting Europeans’ travel habits?
    Which countries will benefit from this new tourism trend?
    Will the Mediterranean lose its status as Europe’s top tourist region?
    What should tourists consider when planning their vacations in 2026?
    Extreme heat is having an increasingly significant impact on Europe’s tourism industry. Some travelers are already postponing their vacations until spring and fall or choosing cooler countries over traditional Mediterranean resorts. Just a few years ago, a summer vacation in France, Spain, Italy, or Greece was considered the classic choice for millions of tourists. However, recent waves of extreme heat are forcing many travelers to rethink their habits. Temperature records are being set more and more frequently not only in July and August, but also in the spring and early fall
    In its new article, National Geographic points out that climate change is already influencing the travel behavior of people across Europe. Some tourists are changing their travel destinations, others are shifting their vacations to the off-season, and some countries are experiencing a new wave of popularity thanks to a more comfortable climate The Heat Has Forced Tourists to Reconsider Their Vacations: A Story from National Geographic
    A telling example of this new trend is the story of British couple Heike and Robert Taylor, as they regularly spent their summer vacations in southern Europe, preferring active travel and immersing themselves in local culture
    However, while vacationing in a region of Italy in the summer of 2022, the couple faced such intense heat that they were forced to spend most of their time in their rental accommodation. Due to the high temperatures, walks, excursions, and their usual vacation activities became practically impossible
    After returning home, the couple decided not to plan any more trips to southern Europe in the height of summer. Now they spend the hottest months of the year in the UK and postpone trips to Mediterranean countries until spring or fall, when weather conditions are more comfortable for vacationing
    This story is far from unique. As National Geographic notes, heat waves are increasingly influencing tourists’ decisions regarding destination choice, travel timing, and vacation format. What was considered an exception just a few years ago is gradually becoming the new reality for Europe’s tourism industry

    How is climate change affecting Europeans’ travel habits?
    The story of the British couple is just one of many examples. A study by the European Travel Commission (ETC) shows that climate change has already become a key factor in vacation planning for most Europeans
    According to the survey, in 2025, 81% of Europeans stated that they are adjusting their travel habits in one way or another due to climate change. Most often, travelers pay attention to air temperature, the risk of extreme heat, and the comfort of their stay during a particular season
    Key trends include:
    – 15% of tourists are actively seeking out countries and regions with cooler climates;
    – 14% try to avoid destinations where extreme heat is frequently reported;
    – An increasing number of people are shifting their vacations from July and August to spring or fall;
    – More flexible travel planning based on weather conditions is growing in popularity
    An additional challenge is that abnormally high temperatures are now observed not only in the middle of summer. For example, in May 2022, temperatures in Spain exceeded the seasonal norm by approximately 15°C, and in September 2023, a heatwave in France even affected the Rugby World Cup matches
    That is why experts are increasingly saying that the tourism industry will have to adapt to new climatic realities. For many travelers, the main consideration when choosing a vacation is no longer just the price or popularity of the destination, but also comfortable weather conditions
    Which countries will benefit from this new tourism trend?
    While southern regions of Europe struggle with rising temperatures, some countries are seeing an influx of tourists thanks to their milder climates. It is precisely these destinations that are increasingly being mentioned in the context of so-called “coolcations” or “cool vacations.”
    Finland
    Finland attracts tourists with its comfortable summer weather, numerous lakes, and national parks. Even during the summer months, temperatures here typically remain significantly lower than in Mediterranean countries, making active vacations more comfortable
    Norway
    Norway continues to solidify its position as one of the most popular destinations for nature lovers. Fjords, mountain trails, and a cool maritime climate are compelling reasons for tourists seeking to escape the sweltering heat
    Iceland
    Icelandhas been showing steady growth in tourist numbers for several years in a row. The country offers unique natural landscapes, and summer temperatures here remain comfortable even at the height of the season
    Poland
    Polandis also on the list of destinations showing rapid growth in popularity among tourists. In addition to a more temperate climate, the country attracts visitors with affordable prices, historic cities, and a well-developed tourism infrastructure
    According to a report by the European Travel Commission, Finland, Norway, Iceland, and Poland are among the European destinations with double-digit growth rates in inbound tourism. This indicates that some travelers are already actively seeking alternatives to traditional summer vacations in the sweltering south of Europe
    Will the Mediterranean lose its status as Europe’s top tourist region?
    Despite the growing interest in cooler destinations, experts do not believe that tourists will abandon vacations in Mediterranean countries en masse in the coming years. France, Spain, and Italy remain among the world’s most popular tourist destinations
    According to UN World Tourism Organization data, in 2025 Francewelcomed approximately 102 million tourists, Spain– 96.8 million, and Italyranked fifth in the world with 64.5 million visitors. This indicates that demand for vacations in these countries remains extremely high
    At the same time, tourists’ behavior is changing. Instead of traveling in July and August, many are choosing May, June, September, or October. During this period, temperatures are more comfortable, and popular cities and resorts are less crowded with tourists
    Representatives of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) also note that interest in cooler countries has not yet become a dominant trend. Most tourists continue to choose Mediterranean resorts, although they are paying increasing attention to weather conditions when planning their vacations
    So, for now, this is not about a decline in the popularity of Southern Europe, but rather a gradual adaptation of the tourism market to new climatic conditions. Some travelers are changing their destination, others are shifting their vacation season, but interest in France, Spain, Italy, and Greece remains very high
    What should tourists consider when planning their vacations in 2026?
    Experts predict that heat waves in Europe will become increasingly frequent and intense. Therefore, when planning a trip, it is important to consider not only ticket prices or the destination’s popularity but also the region’s climate during a specific time of year
    Experts advise:
    – If possible, choose to travel in the spring or fall instead of the peak of the summer season;
    – Check weather forecasts and extreme heat warnings before your trip;
    – Plan excursions and outdoor activities for the morning or evening hours;
    – Always carry a supply of drinking water and sunscreen;
    – Be prepared to change your itinerary or travel dates in case of adverse weather conditions
    According to analysts, travelers will increasingly book trips closer to their departure date and allow themselves more flexibility when choosing a destination. This approach allows them to account for current weather conditions and avoid traveling during dangerous heat waves
    Climate change is already affecting how people travel across Europe. However, experts see this not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity to distribute tourist flows more evenly across countries and seasons. This could help reduce the strain on popular resorts and make travel more comfortable for both visitors and local residents
