Nearly 14,000 pounds of ready-made chicken have been recalled in seven states, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Jan. 16. The chicken, made by Suzanna’s Kitchen of Norcross, Georgia, tested positive for Listeria, a potentially deadly but relatively rare cause of foodborne illness. FSIS gave the recall the highest risk level, Class I, though there have been no confirmed reports of illness so far.
The affected chicken can be identified with the following:
- Product description: fully cooked grilled chicken breast fillets with rib meat
- Packaging: 10-lb cases containing two 5-lb bags
- Lot code: 60104 P1382 287 5 J14
- Establishment number: P-1382
- Affected quantity: 13,720 pounds
The product was shipped to distribution centers for foodservice providers, such as restaurants and cafeterias, in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Ohio.
Because the recalled chicken was only sent to foodservice providers, it’s unlikely to be in consumers’ homes, so there’s no need to check your fridge or freezer.
If you’re concerned about a Listeria infection, FSIS recommends contacting a healthcare provider. Here are the common symptoms to look out for:
- Fever
- Flu-like symptoms, such as muscle aches and fatigue
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
- Seizures
