I’m all about maximizing meals with minimal effort. Whether in terms of flavor or nutrients, if it boosts the plate, I’m all for it. Certain foods’ benefits often surprise me (like blueberries), but when I found out that spinach is a powerhouse of its own, I can’t say I was entirely shocked. The benefits of spinach are impressive, according to dietitians, as it can potentially add years to your life. It’s rich in antioxidants, can lower chronic disease risk, helps support gut health and protects your brain over time. Those are a lot of perks for something that wilts down to nothing when sautéed.

To get the most out of spinach, you’ll need to add it to your plate a few times a week. I always have these greens on hand for salads, stir-fries, and smoothies, but there’s nothing worse than going into its container to find a slimy, wilted mess. If you want to keep fresh leaves in your fridge at all times, like I do, follow this storage tip: Using one of our favorite airtight glass containers—the preferred container choice by experts like cardiologists—is the best way to store spinach to extend its life, and in turn, possibly yours.

The culprit for slimy spinach? Moisture. You want to evade it at all costs. Letting your washed spinach sit in the plastic container or bag from the store can only cause more harm than good. We recommend doing two things as soon as you get home from grocery shopping.

First, remove the leaves and pat them dry without washing them. Second? Line a glass airtight container with paper towels, then place the spinach in, seal the container and store your greens without stress for up to a week.

This large OXO Good Grips glass container is absolutely perfect for storing spinach. When we tested it, we found that the airtight seal was one of the strongest of the lot. We stored leftovers in the container for a week, and the “impressively tight” seal kept them entirely fresh. Your container needs an airtight finish to ward off moisture, in combination with the towel you place inside. Together, this will help prolong the life of your greens. We find this 7-cup size ideal for big boxes of spinach, though it’s best to assess whether you need more than one depending on how much product you buy at a time—you don’t want to pack in your spinach too tightly.

Because it’s glass, you can use this container for other things without worrying about smells or stains lingering—it’ll always be ready to go for your next grocery store haul, making it the perfect vessel for health-packed spinach.
