More than 46,000 pressure cookers sold at Aldi stores nationwide are under recall, the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday.
According to the CPSC, the lid can be opened before enough steam pressure has been released—this means the hot contents inside can escape, posing a serious burn risk to consumers.
So far, there have been 11 incidents reported in connection to the recalled pressure cookers, including eight reports of severe burns.
The recall impacts about 46,660 pressure cookers from Tempo USA Inc. To identify the affected products, check the label on the bottom of the cooker for the following information:
- Product name: Ambiano Electric Pressure Cookers
- Model numbers: 93550 (KY-318B), 96775 (KY-318A), and 98527 (6L-PC)
- Sizes: 6-quart and 8-quart capacity
The affected pressure cookers were sold at Aldi stores across the country from January 2016 to December 2019 for about $40.
Pressure cookers use pressure from steam to significantly raise the temperature of the food inside, reducing the time it takes to cook something.
With these faulty pressure cookers, users are able to open the lid to the appliance before sufficient amounts of steam (and pressure) have been released. In this case, the extremely hot contents inside may be expelled with pressure.
This poses a serious burn hazard—which has already caused eight severe burn injuries.
If you have the recalled pressure cooker, stop using it immediately and seek a refund.
According to the CPSC, consumers can either:
- Return the fully intact pressure cooker to any ALDI retail location for a full refund.
- Submit a photo of the pressure cooker with the unplugged power cord cut and a photo showing the model number and date code to Tempo via email at serviceusa@tempo.org.
