A cheese product is under recall in Michigan due to potential Listeria contamination, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Thursday. One lot of cheddar cheese from Charlevoix Cheese Company was pulled from shelves after the brand’s routine testing found Listeria, a relatively rare cause of foodborne illness but one of the most deadly pathogens. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection to the cheese.
The recalled cheese, produced by Boss Dairy Farms, can be identified with the following:
- Product name: Charlevoix Cheese Company Mild Cheddar Cheese
- Size: 8-ounce block
- UPC: 850056642057
- Lot number: 13220025
- Best-by date: Oct. 20, 2026

If you have the affected cheese in your fridge, toss or return it right away. If you think you’ve already eaten contaminated cheese, monitor for signs of Listeria. In healthy adults, Listeria can cause short-term symptoms of high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
However, the bacteria can cause serious, potentially fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. It can also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant people. Seek medical attention if you experience severe symptoms after eating the recalled cheese.
