Consumers seek natural solutions to handle stress.

The stress relief segment for nutraceuticals and dietary supplements is undergoing dynamic evolution as mental health has become a global health priority. Elevated concerns surrounding work-life balance, post-pandemic well-being and rising rates of anxiety have increasingly driven consumers to seek natural, non-pharmaceutical interventions.

According to Lorena Carboni, senior product manager and scientific communications expert at Gnosis by Lesaffre (France/Milwaukee, WI), there is a sharp pivot toward natural and scientifically supported solutions, increased personalization and clean-label products.

“Globally, there is significant growth in products with adaptogenic ingredients, mood-supportive nutrients, and supplements that support the brain-gut axis. Consumers are drawn to ingredients that not only alleviate stress but also offer holistic benefits, such as improved sleep, enhanced focus and better energy regulation,” Carboni said.

She added, “Digitalization has further fueled the stress relief market. Social commerce, the intermingling of e-commerce and social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, is increasingly becoming the discovery point for supplements offering mental health benefits. Personalization technologies, including AI-powered recommendations, are creating curated experiences, introducing consumers to tailored solutions ranging from stress-specific dietary supplements to personalized adaptogen blends.”

    Trends

Barbara Apps, product manager at Boiron USA (Newtown Square, PA), said consumers are now taking a more prepared approach to stress management. Rather than waiting until they feel overwhelmed, shoppers are keeping stress relief solutions on hand.

“Stress is often unpredictable, whether tied to work demands, travel, family responsibilities or unexpected events, and consumers want to feel equipped to manage those moments as they arise,” Apps said. “There is also growing demand for gentle options that support emotional balance without causing drowsiness or dependency. Overall, the category is evolving toward convenient, approachable solutions that consumers can reach for at the first sign of symptoms.”

Michael Petteruti, president and general manager of Chemi Nutra (Austin, TX), observed a major shift in how consumers think about stress.

“Rather than occasional relief, shoppers are looking for daily emotional stability as they manage ongoing pressures like caregiving, work intensity, sleep disruption and major life changes,” Petteruti said. “Consumers don’t want to feel sedated; they want to feel capable and mentally steady. We often describe this behavior as ‘emotional anchoring’—products are being used to help people stay composed and functional, not simply relaxed.”

Slawek Gromadzki, nutritionist at California-based HealthAid America, observed that stress support has become increasingly gut-centric. He observed a growing recognition that the microbiome plays a meaningful role in the gut-brain communication and helps support emotional well-being during everyday stress. Probiotics are no longer seen solely for digestion.

“Targeted gut-brain formulations are leading the category. Probiotics are gaining attention for helping support a balanced microbiome, which plays a role in maintaining emotional well-being during occasional stress,” Gromadzki said. “Interest is also expanding toward postbiotics and microbial metabolites as research explores gut barrier integrity and microbiome signaling. Adaptogens such as ashwagandha and rhodiola remain relevant for helping the body adapt to occasional stress.”

Nodari Rizun, CEO and founder of California-based Pürblack, added consumers are increasingly seeking holistic approaches that go beyond quick fixes. Instead of just taking something to relax for a few hours, they want daily support that helps with sleep, mood, energy and overall well-being.

“There is also a lot of interest in approaches that work with the body’s natural systems rather than overstimulating or sedating,” Rizun said. “Adaptogens, nervous system support and lifestyle-focused habits are all becoming part of the conversation. One thing I have noticed is that people really want clarity and transparency. They want to understand why a product works, not just buy into vague anti-stress claims.”

    Natural Innovations

There are various natural ingredients and products that are gaining popularity for stress relief supplements.

Rizun observed a strong focus on adaptogens and functional ingredients that help the body handle stress in a balanced, sustainable way. Ingredients such as ashwagandha, rhodiola, magnesium and amino acids such as L-theanine are gaining popularity especially when part of a daily routine rather than a quick fix.

“There is also growing interest in mineral-rich, bioavailable ingredients that support cellular energy and nervous system balance. That approach really resonates with how we think about Pürblack. We focus on high-quality, functional ingredients that support foundational energy and recovery so the body can adapt to stress over time instead of just masking symptoms in the moment,” Rizun explained.

Salidroside, the most important bioactive component of Rhodiola rosea is also gaining traction.

“Salidroside is gaining attention for its robust evidence supporting mental resilience and reducing fatigue during stress, which has enabled the ingredient to obtain specific structure-function claims for its stress-relief effect. As a potent adaptogen and antioxidant, salidroside helps the body adapt to and respond effectively to various stressors, whether physical, emotional or environmental,” Carboni explained.

Carboni added salidroside’s adaptogenic properties modulate the body’s stress response mechanisms, particularly by regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, maintaining cortisol balance, and promoting overall resilience. The antioxidant function helps reduce oxidative stress, protect cells from damage and enhance recovery from intense physical activity.

“Additionally, salidroside’s benefits extend to cardiovascular health, where it improves endothelial function, promotes vasodilation, and protects blood vessels from oxidative damage and inflammation. These comprehensive stress-relieving and cardiovascular advantages position salidroside as a valuable compound for health and wellness solutions,” Carboni said.

Petteruti observed retailers are increasingly seeing interest in “experiential wellness”—ingredients consumers can feel working. Many shoppers now evaluate a product within the first few uses. Noticeable improvements in focus, clarity or composure strongly influence repeat purchases. “As a result, neurologically relevant nutrients such as serotonin-supporting compounds and choline donors like alpha-GPC are gaining traction because they pair perceptible effects with credible biology. The experience often earns consumer trust first, and the clinical science sustains continued use,” Petteruti said.

According to Apps, there is an increasing interest in homeopathic ingredients traditionally used for emotional and situational stress. Ignatia amara is commonly used for emotional stress such as hypersensitivity, irritability, grief and sadness; Gelsemium sempervirens is used for anticipatory stress such as before presentations or big events; and Kali phosphoricum is for mental fatigue from overwork, difficulty concentrating and sleeplessness.

“Consumers are looking for holistic solutions that address the full spectrum of stress-related symptoms, and homeopathy offers an individualized approach. Brands like Boiron are highlighting single medicines and combination formulas that address both emotional and physical symptoms of occasional bouts of stress,” Apps said.

    Natural Products

“We love Anxiocalm by Terry Naturally for anxiety, it’s fabulous for gentle and quick relief. Theanine Serene with Relora by Source Naturals for stress that affects both the mind and body. Vitanica’s Adrenal Assist is a nourishing adaptogen blend for resilience and balance. And Deep Sleep by Herbs, Etc. is a classic herbal formula that is beloved by many,” said Alina Hornfeldt, co-owner of Mastel’s Health Foods in St. Paul, MN.

Gnosis’ Adonat Premium SAMe is an S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) ingredient that is a “powerful contender” in the stress relief category for its dual functionality—promoting mental clarity and emotional resilience. SAMe also offers holistic advantages such as balanced inflammation, neutral protection and energy production.

“SAMe is a naturally occurring compound involved in methylation processes critical for the synthesis of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters are pivotal for regulating mood, cognitive function and sleep patterns. Elevated SAMe levels are clinically associated with improved mood and mental equilibrium, which is vital for managing the physiological impacts of stress,” Carboni explained.

StressProbio from HealthAid was developed to support the gut-brain connection in a simple, once-daily format. The 30 billion CFU formula features eight probiotic strains including Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus helveticus and Bifidobacterium longum combined with prebiotic FOS to help nourish beneficial bacteria.

Chemi Nutra’s SerinAid is a branded form of phosphatidylserine (PS), a life-essential phospholipid naturally found in cell membranes especially in the brain. PS plays an important role in regulating the body’s stress response, particularly the cortisol response associated with mental and physical pressure.

“By helping moderate this response, SerinAid supports composure, cognitive resilience, and the ability to stay clear-headed during stressful situations. Rather than promoting sedation, it may help individuals remain engaged and mentally steady while managing daily stress,” Petteruti explained.

According to Rizun, Pürblack’s goal is to “support baseline resilience.” The company uses ingredients that work with the body’s natural stress response—promoting balance, relaxation and recovery.

“The high-quality shilajit resin we manufacture helps your body handle stress by improving how your cells produce and use energy. Its fulvic acid and ashless humic acids deliver key minerals deep into cells and protect against oxidative stress, helping stabilize the nervous system. The result is simple but powerful: more resilience, steadier energy and a calmer, more balanced response to daily pressure,” Rizun explained.

Boiron’s StressCalm offers an over-the-counter solution for relieving occasional nervous tension, irritability, hypersensitivity and fatigue associated with everyday stress.

As consumers increasingly look for stress solutions that fit seamlessly into busy routines, formats like meltaway tablets provide discreet, convenient support. StressCalm delivers non-drowsy, non-habit-forming relief with no known interactions with medications, helping to ease both emotional and physical symptoms of stress without slowing people down, according to DeAnna Swinton, product manager at Boiron.

“It can also be used for up to two weeks during periods of occasional stress, such as starting a new job or planning a major life event, offering flexible support when it’s needed most. StressCalm helps reduce nervous tension and promotes a sense of calm for both mind and body without slowing consumers down, which is an important differentiator in today’s stress relief category,” Swinton said.

    For Retailers

Swinton said retailers should recognize that stress relief is now a year-round wellness priority. It is important to create a clearly defined stress and mood support section that can help shoppers easily find solutions. Education also remains key so shelf signage and trained staff can help explain how homeopathic stress relief works.

“Highlighting the convenience of meltaway tablets that require no water can resonate strongly with busy consumers. Retailers can also promote stress relief products during peak stress periods such as back to school, holidays, tax season and travel seasons. Messaging that focuses on gentle relief that helps consumers stay clear headed and in control can help drive sales,” Swinton said.

Gromadzki said stress support is evolving beyond single-ingredient mood formulas. Consumers are actively seeking gut-brain solutions and education is critical. Clear communication around how specific probiotic strains helps support microbiome balance and daily resilience, which builds credibility and drives sell-through.

“Merchandising across both digestive and stress-support sections reinforces positioning. When presented as daily resilience support—rather than a quick fix—these products integrate naturally into long-term wellness routines,” Gromadzki said.

According to Petteruti, retailers should avoid positioning stress relief products as only “calming” or “sleep-adjacent” solutions. Today’s consumers are seeking tools to function better under pressure, not simply relaxation.

“Stress support products perform best when merchandised alongside cognitive health and productivity categories, where shoppers already associate supplements with daily performance. Simple education around mood balance and brain chemistry significantly improves shopper confidence and repeat purchase,” Petteruti said.

“Today’s customers are not looking for hype. They are looking for proof. They read labels, question sourcing, and they quickly recognize generic products dressed up with marketing,” Rizun added. “What wins is specificity: where it comes from, how it is made, why the chemistry matters. When people understand the mechanism and feel the difference in their daily stress and resilience, trust follows naturally. That trust is far more powerful and durable than any claim.”VR
