Chia seeds sold at retailers like Whole Foods and Amazon have been recalled nationwide, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Jan. 23. The items were sold under the Navitas Organics brand and pulled from shelves due to potential contamination with Salmonella, bacteria that can cause serious or potentially fatal infections. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection to the recall.

The recall affects Navitas Organics Organic Chia Seeds sold in 8-oz bags with the UPC 858847000284 and the following lot codes and expiration dates:

    • Lot code: W31025283; best if used by: End APR 2027
    • Lot code: W31025286; best if used by: End APR 2027
    • Lot code: W31025287; best if used by: End APR 2027
    • Lot code: W31025311; best if used by: End MAY 2027
    • Lot code: W31025314; best if used by: End MAY 2027
    • Lot code: W31025315; best if used by: End MAY 2027
    • Lot code: W31025316; best if used by: End MAY 2027
    • Lot code: W31025317; best if used by: End MAY 2027

Check your pantry for the recalled chia seeds. If you have them, do not use them. The FDA is urging consumers to open the bag, discard the chia seeds, and dispose of the bag in a manner that makes it unusable. You can also return the product for a refund and call 855-215-5702 to request a replacement.

If you’re concerned that you’ve already consumed contaminated chia seeds, monitor for common Salmonella symptoms, which typically include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain in healthy people.
