A recall is underway for nearly 30,000 bags of herbal tea sold in seven states and Puerto Rico, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The tea, from Celebration Herbals, was initially recalled on Nov. 25 for possible contamination with Salmonella, one of the leading causes of infection, hospitalization, and death from foodborne illness in the U.S.

The recalled tea can be identified with the following:

    • Product name: Celebration Herbals Senna Leaf Herbal Tea
    • Packaging: 24 teabags
    • Net weight: 1.48 ounces
    • UPC: 628240201829
    • Lot code: 251004
    • Best-by date: Oct. 29, 2028
    • Affected quantity: 1,226 retail units

The affected tea was distributed in Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico.

Senna tea is known to have a laxative effect and is often used as a remedy for constipation.

The FDA did not provide specific instructions for this recall, and has not yet classified its risk level. However, since the recall poses a Salmonella risk, the safest option is not to drink any of the affected tea, and to toss or return it instead.

If you think you’ve already consumed contaminated tea, monitor for symptoms of Salmonella, such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever, which usually begin six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria. Seek medical attention if your infection becomes severe.
