Paul Mescal is keeping details of his relationship with Gracie Abrams close to the vest.
In a new Rolling Stone cover story published on Monday, September 15, Mescal, 29, was asked whether there was a “particular moment or milestone” that prompted him and Abrams, 26, to make their romance Instagram official over the summer. (In July, Abrams posted snaps of the pair together at Glastonbury Festival.)
“I don’t know how to answer that,” Mescal told the outlet.
He continued, “I actually do have an answer, but everything to do with that is deeply precious to me and I don’t want to.… This isn’t … I don’t really … umm … I want to protect those things fundamentally.”
The History of Sound actor and Abrams first sparked dating rumors after they were spotted dining together at London’s Brat restaurant in June 2024. Several months later, Abrams supported her man at the Los Angeles premiere of his blockbuster movie Gladiator II. The couple posed for a photo together at the afterparty in November 2024.
Before dating the “That’s So True” singer, Mescal was linked to musician Phoebe Bridgers, a relationship he also kept private.
In a November 2024 GQ cover story, Mescal opened up about having boundaries when it comes to discussing his private life in public.

“I’ve learned that there’s certain lines in the sand now for me that just are going to be impenetrable for the benefit of my own sanity, but also the benefit of my work,” he said. “Because I think if you don’t have those boundaries up in terms of lines in the sand in regards to your private life, people know way too much about you and then they can’t invest in the imagined landscape of your character because they know what your favorite thing to eat for breakfast is.”
“I mean, the speculation has been kind of mad for the last x amount of year. I’m not comfortable inviting any access into that part of my life,” he continued. “How I am in my private life is so precious to me because I get very little of it, and it might be public interest, but it’s not public-obligated information.”
Abrams, for her part, expressed her own desire to keep her love life private in an interview with The Sunday Times in August 2024. “You hope for just privacy in your life as anyone else would. That’s just the truth,” she said.
