A Salmonella outbreak linked to eggs has sickened at least 63 people in California, the state’s department of public health announced Friday. Approximately 1,515 dozen eggs—more than 18,000 individual eggs—distributed by Vega Farms, Inc. have been recalled in connection to the outbreak.

Vega Farms, Inc. has voluntarily recalled Vega Farms brand eggs, which were sold to restaurants, grocery stores, co-ops, and farmers markets in Northern California.

The recalled eggs can further be identified by the information below:

    • Product description: Brown Eggs
    • Handler Code: 2136
    • Julian Date (3-digit number from 001 to 365 corresponding to the day of the year): 328 and prior
    • Sell-by dates: 12-22-25 and prior
    • Brand name: Vega Farms
    • Package sizes:
    • Consumer packaging: 1-dozen cartons and 30-egg flats
    • Foodservice packaging: 15-dozen cases (contains 6 flats of 30 eggs each)

    CDPH

As of December 5, 63 California residents have been reported sick with cases of salmonellosis, an infection caused by Salmonella. Thirteen people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.

Do not eat the recalled eggs. Instead, throw them away or return them to the store for a full refund. If you had the eggs in your home, wash and sanitize any surfaces that may have come in contact with them.

Additionally, businesses should not sell or serve any of the recalled eggs.

If there’s a chance you’ve eaten eggs contaminated with Salmonella, contact your healthcare provider and monitor for symptoms of infection, including:

    • Diarrhea
    • Fever
    • Stomach cramps

Those symptoms can begin six hours to six days after exposure, and can last anywhere from four to seven days. Most people recover without medical treatment, but a Salmonella infection can be severe in young children, people over 65, and those with weakened immune systems.
